The Language of Baklava: A Memoir

The Language of Baklava: A Memoir

From the acclaimed author of Crescent, called “radiant, wise, and passionate” by the Chicago Tribune, here is a vibrant, humorous memoir of growing up with a gregarious Jordanian father who loved to cook. Diana Abu-Jaber weaves the story of her life in upstate New York and in Jordan around vividly remembered meals: everything from Lake Ontario shish kabob cookouts with her Arab-American cousins to goat stew feasts under a Bedouin tent in the desert. These sensuously evoked meals in turn illuminate the two cultures of Diana’s childhoodâ€"American and Jordanianâ€"and the
richness and difficulty of straddling both. They also bring her wonderfully eccentric family to life, most memorably her imperious American grandmother and her impractical, hotheaded, displaced immigrant father, who, like many an immigrant before him, cooked to remember the place he came from and to pass that connection on to his children.

As she does in her fiction, Diana draws us in with her exquisite insight and compassion, and with her amazing talent for describing food and the myriad pleasures and adventures associated with cooking and eating. Each chapter contains mouthwatering recipes for many of the dishes described, from her Middle Eastern grandmother’s Mad Genius Knaffea to her American grandmother’s Easy Roast Beef, to her aunt Aya’s Poetic Baklava. The Language of Baklava gives us the chance not only to grow up alongside Diana, but also to share meals with her every step of the wayâ€"unforgettable feasts that teach her, and us, as much about iden-tity, love, and family as they do about food.

What do you think about international adoption?

International
by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center

Question by Angela M: What do you think about international adoption?

I am currently in the proces of adopting a child from China. Recently, there has been a lot of debate regarding international adoption. A lot of people ask why I am adopting from another country when there are kids here that need to be adopted. I feel the system in the US is too hard to deal with and that the adoptive parents do not have as many rights as the birthmother. She can decide to not terminate parental rights at any time. It should be her perrogative, but I don't want to have a failed placement. That's why I've chosen international adoption. What's your opinion?
My husband does not want to foster. I considered that in the beginning, but respect his decision. Not everybody is cut out to be a foster parent. You have to be really strong in order to let a child in and then out of your life. It's something he can't do.

History and Memory (Historical Approaches)

In recent years, "memory" has become a central and controversial concept in historical studies. It is a term that denotes a new and distinctive field of study and a fresh way of conceptualizing history as a more general field of inquiry. This book provides historians with an accessible and stimulating introduction to debates and theories about memory and approaches to the study of it in history and other disciplines. The book explores the relationships between the individual and the collective, between memory as survival and memory as reconstruction, between remembering as a subjective experience and as a social or cultural practice, and between memory and history as modes of retrospective knowledge.
