Katharine Hepburn (Biography (a & E))

With a mind and will of her own both on screen and off, Katharine Hepburn has become a role model to women worldwide. Barbara Holland's portrait of this outspoken and talented actress reveals the truth behind one of the greatest actresses of our time.

Hepburn's family had a tragic history. By her eighth birthday, three family members were dead from suicide. The death that haunted Kate the most was the suicide of her dear brother, Tommy. His memory echoed throughout her life in her inability to separate herself from self-destructive men.

Hepburn found solace on the stage before eventually making her way to Hollywood. There she starred in Morning Glory, winning the first of her four Academy Awards and launching a film career that was plagued by huge ups and downs in popularity. It was the unique interplay of her public and private personas that made Katharine Hepburn a performer unlike any other.

Holland's unsentimental yet sympathetic portrayal reveals Hepburn's fascination with men with a dark side. She was taken with John Ford's interior bleakness and mesmerized by Spencer Tracy's reclusive habits. In fact, the Hepburn-Tracy romance was not the fairy tale it has been portrayed to be. For decades, Hepburn nursed Tracy when he fell into alcoholic binges and continued to take care of him, even when he turned vicious or became despondent, until his death.

Hepburn's intelligence and iron will shattered the feminine ideal fostered by Hollywood. Here we see the woman's strength, in addition to the pain that lay beneath the surface.

"What you do is to move along, get on with it, and be tough."
--Katharine Hepburn

Raised among the eccentrics and dark secrets of an old New England family, Katharine Hepburn lived above the conventions of her time. Resolutely her own woman, she made herself larger than any role she played, stronger than any man she loved, including the tormented--and tormenting--Spencer Tracy. Barbara Holland explores the pro-
fessional triumphs, the personal tragedies, and the unique human spirit that have made Katharine Hepburn a hero to generations of women.

Holland is one of the many established authors to contribute to the BIOGRAPHY® book series, brought to you by A&E and Park Lane Press. The most prominent expert on Tibetan Buddhism in the West offers a translation of this essential book of Tibetan philosophy that captures the true spirit and poetry of the original work--a profound book that reveals the nature of the mind and its manifestations and offers pure enlightenment.Imagine that as you leave your body at death, you hear the voice of a loved one whispering in your ear explanations of everything you see in the world beyond. Unlike other translations of Bar do thos grol (or The Tibetan Book of the Dead), Robert Thurman's takes literally the entire gamut of metaphysical assumptions. Thurman translates Bar do thos grol as The Great Book of Natural Liberation through Understanding in the Between. It is one of many mortuary texts of the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism and is commonly recited to or by a person facing imminent death. Thurman reproduces it for this purpose, explaining in some depth the Tibetan conception of postmortem existence. Over as many as 12 days, the deceased person is given explanations of what he or she sees and experiences and is guided through innumerable visions of the realms beyond to reach eventual liberation, or, failing that, a safe rebirth. Like a backpacker's guide to a foreign land, Thurman's version is clear, detailed, and sympathetic to the inexperienced voyager. It includes background and supplementary information, and even illustrations (sorry, no maps). Don't wait until the journey has begun. Every page should be read and memorized well ahead of time. --Brian Bruya

Religion and the Constitution: Volume 2: Establishment and Fairness Reviews

Religion and the Constitution: Volume 2: Establishment and Fairness

Balancing respect for religious conviction and the values of liberal democracy is a daunting challenge for judges and lawmakers, particularly when religious groups seek exemption from laws that govern others. Should students in public schools be allowed to organize devotional Bible readings and prayers on school property? Does reciting "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance establish a preferred religion? What does the Constitution have to say about displays of religious symbols and messages on public property? Religion and the Constitution presents a new framework for addressing these and other controversial questions that involve competing demands of fairness, liberty, and constitutional validity.

In this second of two major volumes on the intersection of constitutional and religious issues in the United States, Kent Greenawalt focuses on the Constitution's Establishment Clause, which forbids government from favoring one religion over another, or religion over secularism. The author begins with a history of the clause, its underlying principles, and the Supreme Court's main decisions on establishment, and proceeds to consider specific controversies. Taking a contextual approach, Greenawalt argues that the state's treatment of religion cannot be reduced to a single formula.

Calling throughout for acknowledgment of the way religion gives meaning to people's lives, Religion and the Constitution aims to accommodate the maximum expression of religious conviction that is consistent with a commitment to fairness and the public welfare.

The authoritative, highly acclaimed classic history of the Korean War, THIS KIND OF WAR, is a dramatic and hard-hitting account of the conflict written from the perspective of those who fought it.

The 50th anniversary of the Korean War, which began in June 1950, makes this an appropriate time to revisit this monumental study. Successive generations of U.S. military officers have considered this book an indipensable part of their education. To commemortae the anniversary, this special edition has been updated with battlefield maps, vivid photographs, and a foreword by Gen. Gordon Sullivan, USA (Ret.), former U.S. army chief of staff.

T.R. Fehrenbach's narrative brings to life the harrowing and bloody battles that were fought up and down the Korean Peninsula. Partly drawn from official records, operations journals, and histories, it is based largely on the compelling personal narratives of the small-unit commanders and their troops. Unlike any other work on the Korean War, it provides a clear, panoramic view, sharp insight into the successes and failures of U.S. forces, and a riveting account of fierce clashes between UNited Nationa troops and the North Korean and Chinese communist invaders.

The lessons that Colonel Fehrenbach identifies still resonate. Severe peacetime budget cuts after World War II left the U.S. military a shadow of its former self. The terrible lesson of Korea was that to send into action troops trained for nothing but "serving a hitch" in some quiet billet was an almost criminal act. Throwing these ill-trained and poorly equipped troops into the heat of battle resulted in the war's early routs. The United States was simply unprepared for war. As we enter a new century with Americans and North Koreans continuing to face each other across the 38th parallel, we would do well to remember the price we paid during the Korean War.

Sometimes the professionals are obvious. They've got the moves and the tricks. I mean, this thing is edible. The rest of us amateurs use materials like frosting.

This is my first video ever, and don't expect to hear anything but the camera. :)
So what will you get from this video? You will see how I professionally toy with the bellows, turn the film advance crank (at the same time setting the shutter) and then press the upper shutter release button. As a bonus, I will change the shutter time from 1" to 1/60" and repeat the twist/release process.

There's no film in the camera, of course. :)

One Tough Mother: It's Time to Step Up and Be the Mom

Moms get a lot of advice from TV shows, magazines, friends, their own mothers, and more. But all of this well-meaning counsel tends to paralyze moms. They worry about their children's self-esteem, their health, and whether or not their children like them. They even agonize over scrapbooking every moment of development. Julie Barnhill says, "Enough already!" Unapologetically raucous, slightly irreverent, and refreshingly relevant, One Tough Mother exposes the mind-numbing, brain-draining, confidence-depleting minutia moms get stuck in. With humor and a sharp wit, Julie offers moms a dose of reality and a way to calm their fears about raising children. She encourages moms to straighten up, take back the control from their children, and stand firm on the nonnegotiables. With her help, any mom can become one tough mother.

Here First: Autobiographical Essays by Native American Writers (Modern Library Paperbacks)

Twenty-seven Native American writers describe their lives and art in this compelling collection.

When the editors Arnold Krupat and Brian Swann asked twenty-seven Native American writers to describe their lives in relation to their art, they received an extraordinary array of responses -- twenty-seven pieces of autobiographical remembrance united only by a common set of Native American heritages.

The writers, artists, poets, and academics represented here have recorded a memorable series of personal and family histories illuminated by verse and song, story, and narrative, all fed by the strong oral tradition of the indigenous peoples of this country. As Coming to Light, the collection of Native American writing edited by Brian Swann, demonstrated with literature, the Native American experience is broad and complex, and worth listening to closely.
