How personal should school teacher and counselors get with students?

What are your experiences with good and bad teachers/counselors? What characteristics do the sucessful ones have? Are they more, or less personal? Do they tell you personal things about themselves and make connections with your life or do they stick to what their job is and make it interesting in some way?

Would you like them to judge you personally? Or do like it when they are more objective and point things out about yourself?

What type of method have you found that works for yourself and students?

I think that teachers and councelors should get personal to a certain level. When they tell the students some personal things about them or their lives then the students feel more comfortable and at ease with them and they seem more trustworthy. I think that there is a line that is not to be crossed though as far as student teacher relationships. It's different with each individual. I think we as humans are sometimes too quick to judge people based on their personal information right off the bat. Of course we don't like to be judged, but it happens. I like the more objective approach.
