A day I spent at the Venice Biennale, a day I turned 35, giving a talk at a round table at the Archiphoenix - Faculties for Architecture event.

More on the event (from www.facultiesforarchitecture.org/):

ARCHIPHOENIX - Faculties for Architecture turns the Dutch Pavilion, at this year's Architecture Biennale in Venice, into a weeklong stage for research and exploration and a debate platform focussing on the capacities and capabilities of architecture - beyond building. ARCHIPHOENIX takes the recent burning-down of the Faculty of Architecture in Delft as starting point for an exploration of what values to defend, what territories to explore and what practices to develop as an architect. The fire seems to open a new era, it gives the architecture community a chance to reposition itself and the opportunity to question whether thinking in terms of buildings is the solution to the issues and demands that we will face in the near future. In short: the faculties for architecture, in the sense of its multiple capacities, powers, capabilities. A question mark rather than an exclamation mark.

My submission for week 42/52 of the 2010 Challenge. The theme is ARCHITECTURE.

To my surprise, my five year old son's favorite thing in Paris (well, beside riding the metro) turned out to be Notre Dame, which he insisted on visiting every day we were there. We bought him the model depicted above as a souvenir, which turned out to be quite challenging to put together, and even more challenging to reassemble after unpacking from the trip. Hence the apparent squashing. Even so, as architecture goes, this is a pretty cool structure.

Strobist: gridded strobe with 1/2 CTO, camera right, 1/8 power, triggered by PW. I also used a mirror from camera left to throw some light onto the front face.

View On Black.
